No Ankara: No Semo is a popular comical expression amongst partygoers, particularly in the southern part of Nigeria,  that depicts the popularity of Semolina cuisine in Nigeria.

Now, here’s the good news! Nutritionists have empirically proven that Semo is good for your heart health. How?

Among the numerous nutrients in semolina are fiber, magnesium, and folate, which the heart needs to perform optimally as the nutrients reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke. Magnesium is also essential for heart function: It helps maintain a regular heartbeat, supports muscle and nerve function as well as regulates blood pressure. Folate on the other hand reduces an amino acid associated with cardiovascular disease risk.

A study titled “Dietary fiber and cardiovascular health: a review of current evidence and policy” published online by Cambridge University Press, in July 2019, asserts that high fiber intakes are associated with a wide range of health outcomes including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular health.

Experts affirm that a fiber-rich diet reduces the risk of heart disease. According to a review of 31 studies, people with the highest fiber intake may have up to a 24% reduced risk of heart disease, compared to those with the lowest fiber intake. Fiber supports heart health by lowering LLD (bad) cholesterol, blood pressure, and overall inflammation. A 3-week study observed that eating 23 grams of fiber per day from whole grains reduces LLD cholesterol by 5%.

A study on over 58000 people found that the highest intake of folate- compared to the lowest intake- was associated with a 38% reduced risk of heart disease.

A meta-analysis study published online in the National Library of Medicine in September 2019, suggested that folate reduces the risk of stroke in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Magnesium deficiency in the human body, according to another study in the NLM, is said to have been implicated in multiple cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, cardiac conditions, and diabetes.

Studies also indicate that magnesium-rich diets support overall heart health. For example, a study of over one million people showed that 100mg daily of dietary magnesium reduces heart failure risk by 22% and stroke by 7%.

If you need your heart to work optimally, do not take this information with a grain of salt. Golden Penny’s semolina helps your heart to be in top shape.

So, here’s the takeaway of this piece; While Semo and Ankara is a joke, Semo and Good Heart is a fact
