The new Lion Modular Eye Centre in Ipokia, Ogun State is now opened to the public after its official commissioning Thursday last week. The eye center with state-of -the -art eye health equipment, funded by Lions Club International Foundation and Latter-Day Saint Charities, is one of the six modular eye centers established in different primary health centers in Ogun State by International Association of Lions Clubs, District 404 B1 Nigeria.
While speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Lion Kema Benedicta Ashibuogwu, the District Governor, 404B1 Nigeria, invited all the Ipokia Local Government officials, including the Executive Chairman, Honorable Agbetokun Adewale Wasiu to join the International Association of Lions Clubs.
Lion Ashibuogwu explained to the officials of the LGA that lionism is community service that aims to take communities to the next level particularly in the area of childhood cancer, vision, environment, diabetes and hunger relief needs. According to her, District 404B1 Nigeria, provides support for the communities on all the focus areas, particularly childhood cancer and more. “Our job is to make things easy for people by assisting the government to ensure communities are up to standard”, she said.
The LG boss gave a positive response, on behalf of other Ipokia LGA officials present at the unveiling ceremony, to DG Ashibuogwu’s invitation to the LG officials to join lions’ clubs. He expressed optimism that he and his people will work assiduously to form Ipokia Lions Club.
Honorable Agbetokun Adewale Wasiu, the Executive Chairman of Ipokia LGA, while appreciating Lions Clubs International Foundation and Latter-Day Saint Charites, the donors of the project, thanked Lions District 404B1 and Ogun State Government for selecting two Primary Health Centers in Ipokia LGA for the Modular Eye Centers. According to him, the commissioning of the Modular Eye Centers in the LGA will go a long way to improve health care and eye treatment of the people. The local government boss gave assurance that the local authority will see to the adequate and prompt maintenance of the project.
The Project Committee Chairperson, Lion (PDG) Waheed Kadiri specially thanked the Ipokia LGA Chairman, Hon. Agbetokun for given the space that was renovated by the committee to establish the modular eye center. According to PDG Kadiri, what is more inspiring is not the building but the equipment therein. He charged the people to use the facility for their eye health challenges. “Ipokia Modular Eye Centre is for everybody and not for the privileged only. Don’t wait until emergency or worsening conditions before you visit the facility”, he said.
Lion (PDG) Lekan Babalola, The Vision Project Administrator noted that Ipokia Modular Eye Centre is conceptualized to make eye health care services available, accessible and affordable to the people of Ipokia Local government area and its environs. Adding that the modular eye centers will not only correct refractive errors, provide spectacles, refer other blinding conditions to the Lions Eye Clinic at the Ogun state General Hospital, Ota, the modular centers will also provide platform for eye health education to prevent blindness.
The Project Administrator, Lekan Babalola, at the commissioning also gave a breakdown of the equipment in the modular center. They include screening equipment, examination and diagnostic gadgets, refraction equipment, optical workshop, prescription glasses and other accessories.
PDG Babalola also solicited for the support of the LG boss, the government and people of Ipokia LGA to help the Ipokia Modular Eye Centre meet its objectives particularly in the Key Performance Indicator. “The fact that there are two modular eye centers in the Ipokia LGA means that the government and the people must double efforts to meet the KPI”, he affirmed.
The Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for the LGA, Dr Akindele Adebayo said there is dearth of primary eye care service in the local government area while demand for eye care service have been on the increase. He expressed excitement at the commissioning of the eye center and promised to mobilize the people for the use of the facility
