The Sustainable Vision Project Committee of Lions Club International has commenced a vision restoration outreach in the Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. The outreach, which is part of a comprehensive eye health project of Lions Clubs International, is a follow-up to sensitize further and create awareness for the recently established Modular Eye Centers in six local government areas of Ogun State, Nigeria.
Apart from raising awareness for the Ijoko Modular Eye Center in the Ado-Odo Ota LG, the outreach further demonstrates the committee’s resolve to take the vision project to the nooks and crannies of the LGA. According to the Sustainable Vision Project Committee Chairperson, Lion (PDG) Waheed Kadiri, the outreach is conceptualized to take the eye care services of the modular eye center to the people. “The biggest challenge of eyesight is that most people don’t take it as a priority to go for checkups until there is an opportunity like this outreach that prompts the community people to care for their eyesight”.
Lion Kadiri affirms that apart from free eyeglasses, the outreach also provides the opportunity to identify people with complex vision challenges like cataracts and refer such cases to the Lions Eye Clinic in the Ota General Hospital for further treatment.
Lion(PDG) Lekan Babalola, the Sustainable Vision Project Committee Administrator, corroborated the chairperson on the design of the vision restoration outreach. According to PDG Babalola, the eye health outreach will not only create awareness for the six Eye Modular Centers in the Ogun West senatorial district but visitors to the outreach will also be provided with free eye screening and free medicated glasses. Expatiating on the outreach design, the Project Administrator affirms that the outreach will be done across the six modular eye centers in the six local government areas of Ogun West, including Ado-Odo Ota, Yewa South, Yewa North, Imeko Afon, Ipokia and Idi-Iroko Local Government Areas. The modular centers, he said, were established and funded by Lions Club International Foundation and Later–Day Saint Charities in 2022
Another member of the committee, Lion (PDG) Lynda Odunmbaku, in her address to the cross-section of the people at the Ado Odo Ota Local Secretariat outreach charged the people to take adequate care of their eyesight. According to Odunmbaku, the outreach and the modular centers are part of the Lions Clubs’ efforts to give people access to sustainable eye maintenance in order to reduce the number of people with vision challenges
Lion Adesina Adetunji, the Secretary to the Sustainable Vision Project Committee, informed the people at the Ijoko Modular Eye Center’s outreach about the quality of the modular eye centers. According to the committee scribe, the Lions Clubs International Foundation and Later-Day Saints Charities have been magnanimous in providing quality Centers with quality equipment capable of providing quality eye care services.
The six modular eye centers have since inception in 2022 served more than 60,000 individuals, providing essential services such as eye screenings, prescription glasses, and referrals for surgeries.
About 700 patients with different kinds of vision challenges attended the Ado-Odo Ota LG outreach centers and 520 of them were given prescription glasses free of charge.
Among the beneficiaries is Akinyele Balogun, the electoral officer for the upcoming Local Government election in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, who appreciated Lions Clubs for their outreach in the LG. According to him, as people get older, the parts of the body including the eyes also get older. “ Apart from the eyeglasses that the Lions Clubs gave us, they also counseled us on the appropriate steps, like diets and lifestyle, to take care of our eyes,” he said.
Another beneficiary, Williams from Oju- Ore Ota, also commended the Lions Clubs for the outreach initiative. He scored the initiators very highly for a seamless outreach.
